James or Jim?

His given name is James Wright Foley.

His friends and family called him Jim.

Video Reporter or Photographer?

James was a freelance text reporter and video journalist. The terms photographer and photojournalist most commonly refer to still photographers and therefore don’t apply to Jim.

The Foundation

The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation is dedicated to the vibrant legacy of James W. Foley, a committed freelance conflict journalist, compassionate teacher/mentor and humanitarian.

As a Foundation, we seek to:

  • Advocate for the release of American hostages kidnapped abroad, stimulate research on our current American hostage policy and support Hostage US, a DC-based organization assisting American hostage families.
  • To build awareness of the importance of journalism in the protection of our democracies around the world and to strengthen ACOS (A Culture of Safety) Alliance, an international coalition of media, and freelancers promoting the safety and equity of conflict journalists and photographers.
  • To educate and inspire high school and university students to explore the value and the threats to freedom of speech, dangers of freelance conflict journalism, and the role journalists have played throughout centuries of alerting the world to human rights issues, profound suffering as well as the beauty found in cultures.
