First annual James W. Foley Freedom Awards held at the Newseum in Washington, DC

On May 3, 2016, the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation was honored to present its first annual James W. Foley Freedom Awards at the Newseum in Washington, DC.  The event also commemorated World Press Freedom day, an event celebrated around the world to honor the bravery and important role of reporters and free press around the world.

The Foundation presented three awards. The James Foley American Hostage Freedom Award for an individual who has advocated for freedom for American hostages was presented to David Bradley of Atlantic Media.  The James Foley Press Freedom Award for an individual who has promoted a culture of safety and equity for freelance conflict journalists was presented to David Rohde of Thomson Reuters. And, the James Foley Humanitarian Award for an individual who epitomizes Jim’s compassion and commitment to children with little hope was presented to Nadia Alawa of NuDay Syria.

Over 240 guests joined John and Diane Foley in celebrating Jim’s life and legacy and honoring these remarkable individuals for their achievements.  The Foundation would also like to thank the special guests who joined, including Lisa Monaco, U.S. Homeland Security Advisor to the President and Ambassador Susan Rice, the National Security Advisor to the President.

The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation looks forward to continuing the annual tradition of honoring those who are committed to the values that Jim inspired and demonstrated daily throughout his life.
